SAU is quickly growing, with new dorms being built every year and new degree plans being added to our curriculum it is no surprise that the band program has been expanding as well.

On November 25th, 2019 the groundbreaking ceremony began with a word from Dr. Trey Berry, the president of SAU, who spoke about the importance of the band program. He stated that, the band is an important part of the spirit of SAU and will continue to be in the future.

The dean of Liberal Arts, Dr. Helmut Langerbein, spoke next about the history of the band program at Magnolia. “When the band program started many decades ago there were only four members.” He said. The band was running under the direction of ---Oliver, who the band hall is now named after. In 1999, Sarah Mickey became the band director for the program here, followed a year later by J.P. Wilson. Now the band is at a record high with 160 members. With increasing numbers, the band hall now calls for an expansion in order to accommodate the new numbers.

Mr. Wilson completed the ceremony by talking about his experience as a band director here, stating that he “could be more proud of what has happened here in the last 20 years and can't wait to see what will happen in the future.”
